The stuff with the unreliable narrator is also very interesting, and I will say the reveal that the narrator is not omniscient is done VERY well. It is an enjoyable and decently written rumination on the idea of finding your direction and purpose in life, but I dunno. I'll be honest, as this was advertised as a "horror infused thriller" I kept waiting for it to become that. Midway through any pretense of horror is dropped altogether. Thus you get a novel that starts off interesting with brief moments of genuine creepiness and unease, but they never really feel developed enough. ![]() Instead I feel like Darnielle chose to go in one direction or the other rather than make the story work as both. ![]() ![]() Overall, I think Universal Harvester had a really interesting concept that was just executed a bit poorlyĪll of the elements were there to tell a story that was both terrifying and stuck to the thematic elements of loss, grief, etc I like the Mountain Goats okay but had no idea Darnielle was also a writer. I checked the book out due to a post I had seen on this sub actually. ![]()
